CERTIFICATE IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

(EDI Level 4 Cert TEFL)

The Cert TEFL is a Level 4 qualification (UK NQF equivalent) designed for those people who have little or no experience of teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) but who wish to embark on a career as an EFL teacher. The EDI Cert TEFL is a highly practical course designed to provide candidates with the initial skills they need for teaching English to adult students of other languages.

Aims

  • Evaluate the communicative needs of classes of adult speakers of other languages (both at higher and lower levels)
  • Meet these needs through effective teaching, and
  • Evaluate how effectively they are meeting these needs.

Unit Structure

The EDI Cert TEFL has a unitized structure consisting of 6 mandatory units. The content of each unit is presented in this document in the form of a list of syllabus topics and associated learning outcomes, followed by the unit assessment criteria.

Course Duration

Part Time: twice a week for 6 weeks.

Mode of Delivery

EDI recommends that 120 Guided Learning Hours (GLHs) provide a suitable duration for the Cert TEFL course. This includes direct contact hours of 30 hours, 6 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice and 4 hours of teaching observation, as well as other time when candidates' work is being supervised by the course teachers.

In addition, the candidates are also expected to complete an appropriate amount of self directed study. This self directed study may include background reading, written assignments and other "homework" assignments set by our school.

Mode of Assessment

Cert TEFL is assessed via a combination of teaching practice, teacher observation and written assignments. Each candidate is required to keep a portfolio of work that includes all materials relating to the teaching practice, teacher observation and written assignments.

Admission Criteria

To apply for the course, all trainees are to meet the following admission criteria:

  • 5 GCE "O" Levels with a credit in English

  • International students would need to posses IELTS of 5.5 or English Language at CEF level C2 or equivalent.

  • If you do not fall within any of the above categories and think you are qualified for the course, please submit all your qualifications and a letter explaining why you should be considered. Your application will then be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Award

Successful completion, participants will be awarded with EDI Cert in TEFL. The EDI Cert in TEFL will be awarded by EDI, UK.
